A simple guide to your care
We understand that navigating healthcare can be overwhelming, which is why we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you’re preparing for your first consultation or following up after a procedure, we want to ensure that you feel informed, confident, and well taken care of.
Below, you’ll find important information about your journey with Dr. Adrian Maher, from referral to recovery.

Your Journey with Us
Your care begins with a referral from your GP or specialist. Referrals can be:
- Sent directly from your doctor’s practice via Medical Objects (secure electronic transfer)
- Faxed or emailed to our rooms
- Uploaded directly by you through this website
Once received, your referral is personally reviewed by Dr Adrian Maher. Depending on your needs, you may be offered either:
- A direct-access endoscopy or colonoscopy (for appropriate patients), or
- A clinic appointment for a comprehensive consultation before any procedures
Direct Access Endoscopy and Colonoscopy
For patients suitable for direct access, our practice nurse will call you to review your medical history and medication list. This conversation ensures your safety and that we have all the information we need before your procedure.
During this call, you will also be given:
- Clear instructions about fasting and adjusting medications
- Details of the bowel preparation process (if you are having a colonoscopy)
- Answers to any questions about your upcoming procedure

Bowel Preparation Made Simple
We know bowel preparation can feel overwhelming. To make the process easier, we provide instructions in two ways:
Written instructions (with clear step-by-step guidance), or
The BowelPrepPal app, which sends you notifications at the right times, with both written and visual information. This ensures you know exactly when and how to complete each stage of the preparation.
Our goal is to take the stress out of the process, so you can arrive on the day feeling confident and well-prepared.
After Your Procedure
Following your procedure, Dr Maher will provide results and recommendations to you. Patients are offered either:
A follow-up appointment for ongoing management, or
A report sent back directly to your GP or referring doctor with clear next steps

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
Yes. A valid referral from your GP or specialist is required for consultation and procedures. Referrals can be sent electronically (via Medical Objects), faxed, emailed, or uploaded directly through this website.
What is direct access endoscopy?
Direct access means that, for suitable patients, a colonoscopy or gastroscopy can be arranged without the need for an initial clinic appointment. A nurse from our practice will contact you first to review your medical history and medications, and to provide instructions.
How will I know how to prepare?
You will be given clear written instructions, and we also recommend the BowelPrepPal app, which sends reminders and step-by-step guidance to make preparation easier.
How long will my procedure take?
Most endoscopic procedures take 20–40 minutes, but you should allow several hours at the hospital or day surgery for admission, preparation, and recovery.
When will I get my results?
Dr. Maher will discuss the findings with you on the day of your procedure. Biopsies and polyps require a histology report – this takes an additional 2-5 days. A full report will be sent to your GP or referring doctor, and a follow-up appointment will be arranged if further care is needed.
What should I bring on the day of my procedure?
You will need your hospital paperwork, Medicare and private health insurance details (if applicable), and a list of your current medications. Please also arrange for someone to accompany you home and spend the night with you. This is a legal requirement after having a sedation anaesthetic.
